Wearing a mask is now mandatory. N95, disposable, artisanal or surgical, which one to choose?
In these times of change and adaptation, it can be difficult to differentiate the many types of face protection available. Masks and face shields are available to suit all tastes!
It's protective equipment acts as a barrier to minimize the risk of exposure and contagion to infectious agents and can quickly become an essential part of your routine. As Dr. de Marchie said in an interview on LCN, "You have to see the new reality, adapt, follow the messages, so wear the mask.
Masks are often used in epidemic situations. They play an important role in slowing down to spread of disease worldwide. As stayed by the Institut Nationale de Santé publique du Québec, "the medical mask provide protection to the wearer of the mask (prevention) and to the people around him (source control) when it is properly positioned and covers the nose and mouth so that inhaled and exhaled air passes mainly through the mask and not through the spaces around the mask."
There are different types of masks and facial protection, each with its own use, they all respond to a particular public.
N95 respirators are Class 1 medical devices. This type of mask can achieve a minimum filtration efficiency of 95% when worn properly. The edges of the mask create a junction around the mouth and nose. As noted in this CBC article, N95 masks are for the almost exclusively used for health care personal. The INSPQ states that "they should be used by people trained to use them properly."
Surgical masks offer a lower seal than N95, but are softer and lighter. According to the Scientific Opinion on the wearing of masks in the Community in a Pandemic Influenza Situation, "They should be worn in such a way as to completely cover the nose (by adapting the metal nose clip) and mouth. The clip should fit over the nose and there should be no gaps at the sides. This type of mask is inexpensive, comfortable and can be worn by the vast majority of individuals."

KN95 masks are the equivalent of N95, with the difference that they are made in China. As stated by Solveig McClure, "permission to use KN95 masks for medical purposes was given because of the pandemic, according to the Health Canada website.

Artisanal masks provide greater comfort, especially when worn for extended periods of time, and can "prevent the wearer from touching his or her nose and mouth, but their primary purpose is to protect others," says the ASPC.
Made from a variety of materials, they are available in a variety of formats, sizes and patterns. However, the Quebec government has issued a warning for children under 2 years of age and people with breathing difficulties, for whom wearing a mask can be dangerous.
All in all, artisanal masks are comfortable to wear, washable and reusable. Advantages that N95, surgical and disposable masks cannot offer.

Protective Face Shield
The face shield is the perfect additional protection for everyday life and outings. As the QNPUI reminds us, wearing a face shield alone is possible, "as a last resort solution", but should ideally be combined with a face mask.
Although some people find it more comfortable and less cumbersome, wearing it "cannot replace wearing a face cover in indoor places" because as the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux explains, it offers "no waterproofing". This is why they are generally used "in addition to a mask" and the safety measures in place.
The face shield, worn as a complement to the mask, is a wise choice to offer a maximum level of protection to customers in restaurants, shops, offices and all other places where commercial activities have resumed.
